NY USPS Worker Sentenced for Stealing Workers’ Comp Checks Belonging to Girlfriend’s Mother

According to Insurance Journal and the New York State Workers’ Compensation Fraud Inspector General, Lucy Lang, a former U.S. Postal Service worker plead guilty and has been sentenced for defrauding the New York Workers’ Compensation system of approximately $10,000 by stealing checks sent to his previous girlfriend’s deceased mother.
An investigation determined that Thomas O. Malicki of Kenmore, NY, “stole, endorsed, and deposited 18 workers’ compensation benefit checks mailed to his then-girlfriend’s mother after she passed away,” between September 2020 and July 2021.
According to Insurance Journal, “Prosecutors said that in an attempt to conceal his actions, Malicki used the stolen funds to purchase USPS money orders before using the money for personal expenses.”
Malicki has paid the full restitution amount of $9,776.52, and was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge.
