Peak Atlantic Hurricane Season is Coming, Potential Increase in Claims/Fraud

As previously reported, New Jersey's tropical storm activity (as well as other northeastern coastal states) has historically been between August and late October. The peak of the season is nearly upon us. According to Insurance Journal and AccuWeather meteorologists, “Atlantic hurricane season could intensify in the coming weeks as less wind shear and less dry air create conducive conditions for storm development.”

Additionally, “AccuWeather is forecasting six to 10 named storms to form in the Atlantic from Aug. 27 to Sept. 30. The historic average during that span is six named storms.”

Our biggest threats? The potential for destructive winds, tornadic activity, and flash flooding.

How does this affect us? Well, storms like Irene in 2011, Sandy in 2012, and even Ida in 2021 made their way to us in impactful ways, and it appears we’ve seen an alarming uptick in tornadic activity in recent years. These, among other catastrophic weather events, invite fraud whether it be in the form of inflated, fraudulent claims by homeowners, or fraudulent contractors looking to capitalize on homeowners’ grief, vulnerability, and urgency to get their homes and lives back together, by taking deposits with no intention on completing the work, incomplete jobs, shoddy workmanship, etc.

So far this season, Beryl produced severe storms and tornadoes through the Midwest and Northeast, and Debby produced widespread flooding in Florida and the Carolinas, up through Pennsylvania and upstate New York. More are expected.

We are always ready and on standby for your investigative needs.
