According to 6ABC, 46-year-old Lakisha Hines, a former U.S. Postal Service employee in Delaware, has officially been sentenced to probation after defrauding taxpayers of approximately $100,000 in relation to a workers’ compensation fraud charge last month.
The charges stem from a work injury sustained by Hines back in 2006. She then began receiving workers’ compensation benefits, and court records indicated that the benefits were her only source of income for years. However, Hines began working again in 2016 and she failed to inform the U.S. Department of Labor. She falsely claimed she had no additional source of income for the next 6 years.
Hines initially pleaded guilty in March 2024 to one count of federal employee compensation fraud, which holds a maximum sentence of five years prison time. However, she has been sentenced to 3 years of probation and a restitution payment of approximately $94,000.
6ABC stated, “Federal prosecutors said a sentence of probation would allow Hines to keep working at her current jobs and to ‘chip away’ at the restitution she owes. They acknowledged, however, that Hines may not be able to fully repay what she owes.”
