Auto Theft Ring Leader Pleads Guilty in NJ

An article in Insurance Journal reports that Jose D. Lopez, 33, of South Amboy, New Jersey has admitted to directing a vehicle theft ring including 100 stolen vehicles and totaling more than $550,000.

As of last month, according to the Attorney General’s office, Lopez has pleaded guilty to “first-degree promotion of organized street crime and other charges.”

Lopez confessed to plotting to steal 104 vehicles in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The vehicles included a multitude of makes and models, including Ford contractor vans, Honda passenger cars, even a Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle, among plenty of others.

The scheme has affected many people, according to acting Attorney General, John Hoffman. As if having your car stolen wasn’t enough of a headache, Hoffman says the scheme has “also impacted the jobs of hard-working New Jersey contractors by stealing vans and tools belonging to plumbers, electricians and painters.”

Lopez is facing up to 15 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for September 16, 2013.
