Tragic: CA Man Sentenced for Driving Sons and Ex-Wife off Port of LA Pier for Insurance Payout

This is just a true testament to the disgusting lengths some people will go to for money.

According to NBC Los Angeles, early last month, Ali Elmezayen of Hawthorne, CA was sentenced to 212 years in federal prison for an insurance fraud scheme that U.S. District Judge John F. Walter dubbed as truly “evil and diabolical.”

Here is the timeline of events:

  • In 2012 and 2013, Elmezayen acquired $7 million in life and accidental death insurance coverage on his family with eight different companies.

  • On April 9, 2015, Elmezayen drove his car containing his ex-wife, Rehab Diab, and their two severely autistic sons, 13-year-old Elhassan and 8-year-old Abdelkarim, off Port of LA Pier, swam out of his open window, and left them to die to collect the insurance policies he had taken out on them two years prior. Diab, who did not know how to swim, was able to escape. However, their two sons drowned to death strapped in their car seats.

  • After two of his son’s deaths, he collected approximately $262,000 in insurance proceeds, and also filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles “where he tried to collect more money from the deaths by blaming the city for the loss of his children,” said Judge Walter.

  • The article states he was, “convicted in October 2019 of more than a dozen federal charges including mail and wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering. Federal prosecutors lacked jurisdiction for federal murder charges.”

  • However, Elmezayen now faces murder charges in Los Angeles Superior Court after federal prosecutors shared the new evidence.

During the trial, Judge Walter stated, “He murdered his two autistic children, letting two innocent young boys die an extraordinarily painful death while strapped in their (car) seats,” “It's undisputed that death by drowning is a painful way to die. I can only imagine the horror they must have experienced as they struggled to get out of their seats ... as their lungs filled up with water,” and “He is the ultimate phony and a skillful liar... and is nothing more than a greedy and brutal killer. The only regret that the defendant has is that he got caught.”
